Time to plant the flag. Printful is the factory. The account is free, you don't enter a credit card to sign up, and you only pay when an order actually happens. Here's the path from zero to a working account.
Step 1 — Create the account
- Go to printful.com and hit "Sign Up."
- Use the email you'll use for your brand — not your personal junk address.
- Confirm via the email link.
Step 2 — Tour the dashboard
Once logged in, you'll see these key sections in the sidebar:
- Stores — where you'll connect Etsy, Shopify, or use Printful's free store. Skip for now.
- Product Catalog — every blank product Printful offers. This is your candy store.
- Orders — empty for now. Will fill up when you sell.
- Billing — where your card goes. We'll add it later.
- Settings — your brand name, shipping return address, packing slip customization.
Step 3 — Explore the catalog
Click Product Catalog. Filter by category: T-shirts, Hoodies, Hats, Posters, Mugs, Stickers, Phone Cases, Tote Bags. For each product Printful shows you:
- The base cost (what YOU pay them when an order ships)
- Available colors and sizes
- Print areas (front, back, sleeves, etc.)
- Print file requirements (DPI, dimensions)
Spend 30 minutes here. Click around. Note 5 products that fit your brand. We'll use these in Lesson 05.
Step 4 — Brand settings
Go to Settings → Branding. Even on the free plan you can:
- Add your logo to the packing slip
- Write a thank-you message that prints on the slip
- Set your return address (use Printful's address if you don't want yours on the slip — totally fine)
This tiny step makes your unboxing feel like a real brand instead of a dropshipped Amazon thing.
Step 5 — Order a sample (eventually)
Printful gives discounted samples (~20% off + free shipping on your first few). Once you have a real design, order one of your own products. Two reasons:
- Quality check — colors, print sharpness, fabric feel. You need to know what you're selling.
- Content — photograph it in real life. These shots crush stock mockups for social posts.
Plans & pricing
Printful has a free tier and paid tiers (Printful Growth, Business). For your first 6+ months, the free tier is all you need. The paid plans unlock things like deeper product discounts and embroidery features — relevant once you're doing real volume.
Action step
- Create your Printful account
- Spend 30 minutes in the Product Catalog
- Note 3 products that match your brand (write down the base cost of each)
- Fill out brand settings: logo placeholder, thank-you message
